UMLC hosting 5K/10K with virtual option

The Union Mills Learning Center is hosting a virtual 5K/10K race on Feb. 27. The event, formerly known as the Box Creek Wilderness run, will represent the Union Mills community as the first race in the Rutherford Outdoor Coalition Race Series.

The race points will be award for the 5K in-person event this year. Overall awards as well as first, second and third-place medals will be awarded.

The races will begin at 10 a.m. The reason for the virtual option is so officials can ensure the safety of the participants and follow social distancing guidelines. The virtual option will allow participants to choose a route of their own and submit their self-timed report between Feb. 26 and Feb. 28.

Participants in the virtual category will receive finisher medals, since placement times can’t be verified by a chip bib. All entries who register by the deadline of 11:59 p.m. on Feb. 24 will receive a t-shirt. There will be no race day sign-up option. An award ceremony will be broadcasted on Facebook Live after the in-person race with all medals being mailed.

The registration fee is $25 for each race. In the event that guidelines are changed by county or state officials, all races will be virtual and participants will be automatically moved to that option. There will be no refunds given for the event.
