FOREST CITY — The East Rutherford Lady Cavaliers softball team got a huge performance from Haley Lawing both in the circle and at the dish in an 11-1 victory over Shelby in five innings on senior night.
Lawing was 3-3 at the plate with two doubles, a single, a walk and four RBIs, while striking out seven batters over five innings.
East Rutherford head coach Laura Ray was pleased with her team’s at-bats as well as the performance of Lawing in the circle.
“We told them coming in that you have to make sure you are seeing the ball well and to have a two-strike approach and that’s what they did,” she said. “They did exactly what we asked. You can’t ask for more than that. Haley did a great job of letting her defense work. She could have gotten into some tight spots and gave up some walks, but she didn’t. She did what she was supposed to do in making sure her defense was trusted.”
Shelby struck first with a run in the first inning. Yahreia Peeler tripled down the right field line and then scored on a RBI single by Ann Marie Spurling and Shelby led 1-0 after the top of the first.
East Rutherford answered right back in the bottom of the inning. Carmen Pruett singled to center and the ball was misplayed in the outfield, allowing Pruett to reach third. Pruett then came home on an errant throw to the infield, tying the game at 1.
Lawing allowed a walk and a single to lead off the top of the second, before recording two strikeouts and a popout to end the threat, keeping the game scoreless.
The Lady Cavaliers would strand a pair of runners in the bottom of the second, but Lawing would keep the game scoreless, working around a single in the top of the third.
East Rutherford’s offense would go to work in the bottom of the third. Jenna Davis reached base on an infield single, which was followed up by a Pruett walk. Lawing then drove home Davis with a single to right. Courtesy runner Lisa Price then stole second and scored along with Pruett on an Ashleigh Pacheco single, stretching the lead to 4-1.
After a quick top of the fourth, the Lady Cavs went back to work at the plate.
Jaylyn Twitty was hit by a pitch, which was followed up by singles by Davis and Pruett, loading the bases and setting the stage for Lawing, who scored all three runners with a double to left, breaking the game open and giving East Rutherford a 7-1 lead.
Lawing would quickly retire Shelby in the top of the fifth and the bats went to work immediately.
Jaylee Henline was hit by a pitch to begin the inning with Cagney Pruett and Makinnia Miller following that up with singles to load the bases. After a fielder’s choice, Twitty delivered a two-run single, putting East Rutherford ahead 9-1. Halle McFarland would then score on a wild pitch, putting East Rutherford ahead 10-1.
Davis was then hit by a pitch and Pruett was intentionally walked to load the bases for Lawing. Lawing would draw a walk, bringing home Twitty to give the Lady Cavaliers the 11-1 win.
East Rutherford’s lone senior Makinnia Miller talked about her time as a Cavalier.
“It’s amazing to get this win on senior night,” she said. “There have been a lot of ups and downs, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I love each and every one of these girls.”
East Rutherford traveled to Burns on Friday night with the conference title on the line.
