Sam Flack

East’s Sam Flack prepares to serve during Thursday’s match.

FOREST CITY — The East Rutherford Lady Cavaliers dropped their second straight match on Thursday as the 1A Polk County Lady Wolverines claimed the straight sets victory in a decisive manner (25-7, 25-11, 25-13).

Polk County (1-0), jumped out to a 7-0 lead, before Devoria Boykins hammered a kill, cutting the lead to 7-1. But the Lady Wolverines would mash down on the accelerator, scoring the next nine points to take a 16-1 lead before an unforced error ended the streak. East (0-2, 0-1 Southwestern Conference) would pick up a pair of points on two Sam Flack aces and another on a Kaylee Guffey kill, but the Lady Wolverines smashed back-to-back kills to take the first set.

The second set would be similar to the first as Polk stormed ahead 4-0, before a Cammie Walker kill cut the lead to 4-1. After three straight Polk kills, it was Walker again who ended the run, this time with a block. The two teams exchanged the next four points before Polk would go on a 4-0 run. East would get a tip from Brie Moose and a kill from Guffey, cutting the lead to 16-8, but Polk would reel off the next eight points to take a 24-8 lead. East countered with a 3-0 run, capped by an Ashleigh Jones kill, but a net violation ended the set.

The third set would be the tightest of all as East stayed neck and neck with Polk behind a Walker block and a Jones block. Polk would take a 7-3 lead, but Moose would answer with another tip. A Sequoyah Lowrance block made the score 9-6, in favor of Polk, but that’s as close as the Lady Cavs would come as the Lady Wolverines captured 12 of the next 16 points to take a 21-10 lead.

East answered with a pair of Flack aces, but the Lady Wolverines would win the next four points to take the set and the match.

East Rutherford returns to action on Monday at home against Burns.
