Thanks to those who helped Wreaths Across America event

To the editor:

Thanks to all who volunteered and assisted in any manner on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2020, at the Fifth annual Wreaths Across America Day event, sponsored by the Griffith Rutherford Chapter, of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

A special recognition to Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery, Cosmo Pannell, Bruce Dobbins, Donna Potter and staff, and Harrelson’s Funeral Home, Lanny Funchess and staff, for their assistance.

We say “Thank You” to all those who purchased wreaths for Veterans graves and families who volunteered to purchase wreaths and place them. A special “Thanks” to RS Central High School MC JROTC cadets for presenting the flag, to the Rev. Matt Mills from Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Forest City, as speaker for the event, and to Peter McCann from Disabled American Veterans for TAPS at end of the program.

Thanks to members of the American Legion Post 423, in Caroleen, for assistance in preparing wreaths for placement, and Blue Star Mother, Tara Horton and husband Nathan, who so graciously provided refreshments for those who attended.

Thanks to Harris Septic, Phil and Larry, in Ellenboro, for providing facilities.

We were able to place 172 wreaths on veterans’ graves, because of those who sponsored wreaths.

As we stood at each grave and read the names of those who served, we were reminded of their sacrifice, with great emotion, as we saw salutes from veterans as they walked away. As we placed wreaths on veteran graves, we were assured that they were not forgotten, during this season of love.

There are over 800 veterans buried at the Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery. Next year, perhaps, you can remember a veteran with a wreath and a bit of your time.
