FOREST CITY — One man was killed and another injured after the two men exchanged gunfire Friday evening.

Rutherford County Sheriff Chris Francis declined to offer a motive in the case or identify who fired first in the 5:35 p.m. shooting on Doggett Road.

“We have an idea, but we want to continue to work it and conduct interviews,” Francis said Monday of the ongoing investigation.

Deputies responded to a 911 call at the residence in regard to a male subject pointing a handgun. When officers arrived on the scene they found Jarvis Cole Tate, 29, in front of the house dead from multiple gunshot wounds. Douglas Cole Suhy, 25, had suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, Francis said.

Tate was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies applied a tourniquet and rendered first aid to Suhy until paramedics arrived. Suhy was taken to Cleveland Regional Medical Center where he was treated and later released.

Investigators continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the shooting. In addition to more interviews, the investigation will include gathering information from the men’s electronic devices, such as their cellphones. Search warrants have been secured for the devices, Francis said.

The two men were acquaintances as Tate knew Suhy’s brother, the sheriff said.

The Rutherford County District Attorney’s Office joined the sheriff’s office during Friday night’s investigation, Francis added.

Tate has a criminal record. He was in court earlier Friday on charges of possession of methamphetamine, Tate, regarded as a habitual felon, is facing his fourth felonious offense, Francis said.

Suhy has no known criminal history.

The shooting occurred outside Suhy’s grandparents’ home.

“This is a family home-place for Suhy and where he grew up,” Francis said.

Both men were apparently armed with 9mm handguns at the time.

An autopsy for Tate was slated for Monday.
