CANE CREEK — A Forest City man was killed in a single-car crash Wednesday morning.
Calvin L. Watkins, 33, was found deceased in a 2000 Ford Expedition following a wreck on U.S. Highway 64, east of Old Morganton Road. The N.C. Highway Patrol received the call at 7:21 a.m.
“We think it happened well before that, but we don’t have a time,” trooper B.M. McDaniel said of finding the hood of the car cold.
McDaniel said Watkins had been heading east on U.S. 64 when he apparently ran off the right shoulder, overcorrected before veering off the left shoulder then yanking the wheel. The second overcorrection led to Watkins losing control and skidding across wet grass before slamming into a tree.
“We’re not sure what caused him to run off the road,” McDaniel said.
He was wearing a seatbelt and there was no evidence of alcohol.
Speed and inattentiveness, however, were factors in the crash, McDaniel said.
It’s unclear where the victim was coming from or going at the time of the crash.
