FOREST CITY — The Forest City Commissioners approved a sign ordinance amendment at Monday’s regularly scheduled board meeting.

The current wall sign ordinance permits one square foot of signage per every foot of the building wall in length. An applicant submitted a sign plan for a building with a 30 foot front wall and a 90 foot side wall. The same applicant built a sign that measures 55 square feet for the front wall and 50 square feet for the side wall.

The proposed changes would allow unused signage to be transferred from one wall to another.

After reviewing sign ordinances from other towns’, staff recommended allowing “borrowing” of unused square footage that does not exceed 25%. Staff also recommended that the “borrowed” signage should not exceed the unused signage and the property owner must sign off on the plans.

Commissioner Chris Lee made a motion to recommend the approval as presented and consistent with the Comprehensive Plan with an amendment to Chapter 6.

Also at the meeting, Commissioners set a public hearing for Oct. 4 in regards to multiple amendments.
