SPINDALE — Authorities suspect a driver suffered a fatal medical condition before he plowed his SUV into a house, well and propane tank before hitting a tree.

The N.C. Highway Patrol responded to a crash at 1750 Oakland Road at 4:36 p.m. Wednesday. Jason Kelly Smith, 41, of Jack McKinney Road, was found to have died in the vehicle, according to trooper J.R. Carver.

Smith reportedly had pulled into a driveway, 90 degrees from Oakland Road. He then rolled the Chevrolet Trailblazer across a yard before hitting the house, well and propane tank at the residence. Smith then struck a tree and where the vehicle came to a rest, Carver said.

The incident remains under investigation. Carver suspects Smith had some type of a medical condition causing him to pull over and then roll across the yard afterward, the trooper added.
