Ann Almond, of Rutherfordton, is paying homage to her daughter’s dog, Aspen, a 6-year-old German short-haired pointer. Earlier this month at around 2 a.m. Aspen awakened his family with a “distressed bark.” At that time they found the house ablaze, prompting the quick exit of Ann’s daughter, Ashley Spicer, her husband Sandy, and their three children, including a 3-year-old baby. The Spicer family and their dogs escaped unharmed, but the house near Elkin, its contents and a kitten were lost. “We are so very blessed to have our family members. They were saved by this wonderful dog, whom we love so much,” Almond said. Ashley Spicer, formerly Ashley Helms, is a graduate of R-S Central High School.
