RUTHERFORDTON — A 85-year-old man has been charged with taking indecent liberties with children.
Claude Linden Keever, of Rutherfordton, was arrested Monday on four counts of taking indecent liberties with a child and one count of attempting to take indecent liberties with a child. He was given a secured bond in the amount of $240,000.
Allegations against Keever were reported on July 20. A joint investigation involving the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office and the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation followed. The SBI was contacted because Claude L. Keever is related to Capt. Jamie Keever of the Sheriff’s Office. He is a captain in the criminal investigation division.
The investigation revealed that Claude L. Keever had taken, or attempted to take, indecent liberties with at least three additional victims. These victims were juveniles at the time the offenses occurred. They are, however, adults presently, according to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.
While the Sheriff’s Office reports the investigation related to Claude Keever is ongoing, one victim’s father claims his 12-year-old son was sexually assaulted by the suspect more recently.
Kyle Whitley said he reported the incident on July 20. Whitley also said his son told him that Claude Keever had touched him inappropriately while driving to Meadowbrook Golf Course over the summer.
Whitley said he provided the Sheriff’s Office with video recordings of Claude Keever’s wife and son acknowledging the suspect’s history of sexual abuse involving children.
