Hendersonville hammers Post 423
This is not how coach Sam Hooper envisioned opening night for Post 423. Hendersonville scored in all but two innings as they routed Rutherford County in 13-2 affair that was shortened due to the mercy rule Friday night at McNair Field
“Conner did not have his best stuff tonight,” said Hopper. “He was wild and that was surprising. Our depth hurt us tonight because we had to go to the pen early, but the good thing is we got our feet wet and get to come try again tomorrow.”
After a quiet first inning from both teams, Hendersonville’s Avery Sneed took the first pitch of the second and drove it over the wall in left for a solo homer. Post 423’s (0-1) Conner Dailey settled down and struck out two of the next three batters to limit the damage to one run.
The visitors went right back to work in the third as they loaded the bases with no outs.
Dailey proceeded to walk in a run before he was replaced by Dylan Parris.
A botched double-play ball, a single and a hit batter made the tally 5-0 before Rutherford County could retire the side.
The home team mounted a threat in the bottom half. Dailey drew a leadoff walk and Zach Norville garnered the first hit, but they were left stranded to leave the score at 5-0.
The Hendersonville hit parade continued in the fourth.
Sneed and Noah Poteat each had RBI hits as their lead grew to 8-0.
Rutherford County finally got on the board in their next at bat. Brent McCollum nearly hit a one-out homer to dead center but settled for a triple. One batter later, Parris sent a deep fly ball over the left field wall to cut the deficit to 8-2.
Post 423 gave those runs right back with wild pitching.
A bases-loaded walk and a pair of wild pitches allowed three runs to score and push the Hendersonville advantage to 11-2 after six frames.
Another wild pitch and a pair of singles made the score 13-2 in the top of the seventh. Post 423 did manage a base runner in the bottom half but could not score to account for the 13-2 final.
Post 423 will have a quick turnaround as they host Asheville tonight at 7 p.m.
