McHenry to speak at GWU
U. S. Representative Patrick McHenry will visit Gardner-Webb University on Friday, where he will meet with students, staff, and faculty members and serve as guest lecturer for the University’s American Government class.
The event is planned from 9:15 a.m. to 11 a.m. in Stewart Hall of Tucker Student Center, located on the GWU campus.
“We are pleased to have Congressman McHenry, who represents this area, lecture our American Government class,” said Walter Dalton, GWU distinguished visiting professor and former N.C. Lieutenant Governor. “The words on a page or heard through lecture are valuable, but to have the opportunity for discussion with someone who has real-world experience in Congress will breathe life into the curriculum.”
McHenry is currently serving his fifth term in the United States Congress where he represents citizens of North Carolina’s 10th District, which is comprised of seven counties in western N.C., from the suburbs of Charlotte to Asheville. He was elected to Congress in 2004 at the age of 29, and previously represented the 109th District in the North Carolina House of Representatives.
He is a graduate of Ashbrook High School in Gastonia and earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Belmont Abbey College. Throughout his political career, McHenry has been recognized as a leader of the conservative movement in America. According to National Journal, he shares the most conservative voting record in Congress on family values issues.
“I hope our students will gain a greater appreciation for the public service of our elected officials and realize that they are important to the process, because the process and its results are important to our elected officials,” Dalton said.
A meet-and-greet time is planned from 9:15 a.m. to 10 a.m. in Stewart Hall, located on the main floor of the Tucker Student Center. Beginning at 10 a.m., McHenry will address members of Dalton’s American Government class along with others who would like to stay to hear the lecture. Students will be given an opportunity to participate in a question-and-answer session with McHenry.
