Cheers and jeers

Apr. 20, 2013 @ 05:39 AM

Cheers ... to the 2013 Rutherford County Schools Hall of Fame class. Inductees Albert B. Bushong, Dee C. Cole, Jane S. Flack, Henrietta C. Twitty, J.J. Tarlton, Forrest W. Hunt, Roger T. Petty, Robert and Janice McNair and Dr. Bobby England have been staunch supporters of Rutherford County Schools and we commend them all.

Cheers ... to Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy for its performance at the State Quiz Bowl in Durham. TJCA won first place for middle school students and second place for the high school.

Cheers ... to Debbie Bedford, Rutherford County Elections Director, who was recently elected president of the state group of election directors.

Cheers ... to former Chase High School pitcher Todd Coffey who had his No. 19 retired by the school on Thursday. Coffey signed with the Cincinnati Reds in 1998.

Jeers ... to Senator Richard Burr, who voted to kill any meaningful discussion of gun safety issues such as expanding background checks to individual gun deals, an issue that the majority of Americans (and a majority of NRA members) support.

Cheers ... to the Bostic Lincoln Spring Festival being held today in Bostic.

Cheers ... to R-S Central pitcher Dustin McEntire for throwing a no-hitter against Freedom on Thursday night. McEntire struck out six while facing 22 batters. Only three reached base, all on fielding errors.

Jeers ... to those responsible for the bombing in Boston and the ricin laced letters sent to a U.S. Senator and the President. These are acts of cowardice committed by cowards.

Cheers ... to the first responders, medical personnel and ordinary citizens who responded to the bombings swiftly and heroically rendering life saving care.

Cheers ... to the people of Boston for their resolve and determination in the face of tragedy.

Jeers ... to all those in the media who are speculating on the motives of the Boston bombers before all the facts are in.

From a reader ...

Cheers ... to the NC/SC Battle of the Border. Over 700 youngsters and their parents were in town for the basketball tournament over the past weekend. Thanks so much to Larry Ross, tournament director and the over 30 local coaches who give their time to coach these youngsters. But most importantly, these men spend countless hours tutoring these kids in the life skills they will need and keeping them in a safe and wholesome environment as they grow into young men.
