Aide to NC pastor says he's running for Senate
A political consultant to the Rev. Mark Harris says the Charlotte pastor plans to run for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate next year.
Tom Perdue says Harris plans to tell supporters meeting outside Winston-Salem on Thursday of his intentions. Perdue says Harris will make an official announcement Oct. 2.
Harris is senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Charlotte and president of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. He went on a "listening tour" this summer to more than 70 locations to gauge interest in a Senate bid.
Harris would join at least three other people who are running for the GOP nomination. The winner would likely challenge Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan in the general election. The Republican hopefuls include House Speaker Thom Tillis.
