NC House Democrat Foushee moving to Senate
The choice of Orange and Chatham county Democrats to succeed a longtime state senator means another round of musical chairs at the North Carolina General Assembly.
A committee of local Democratic leaders picked state Rep. Valerie Foushee of Chapel Hill to fill the remainder of Sen. Ellie Kinnaird's term through 2014. Kinnaird resigned last month after 16-plus years in the Senate. Gov. Pat McCrory is required by law to appoint Foushee, who beat out several other contenders Sunday.
Now Durham and Orange county Democratic leaders in Foushee's district will meet soon to name Foushee's replacement in the House.
Foushee is in her first year in the legislature but previously led the Orange County commissioners and Chapel Hill-Carrboro school board. The General Assembly isn't set to meet again until next May.
