Commerce agency changes to wait until 3rd quarter
The timetable to move some functions of North Carolina's Commerce Department to a private economic development group is being delayed a few more months.
The agency has told the state budget office that none of the five divisions it wants to move to the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina will be transferred until the third quarter of the year. The updated plans were discussed Tuesday with a legislative oversight committee.
The Commerce Department previously expected two divisions would move to the partnership by the end of June. A department attorney wrote that the new approach slows the process to ensure a seamless transition for the services.
Some lawmakers previously expressed concern the process was going too fast. Legislation has not yet been approved to finalize the move.
