SBI investigating elections board in NC county

The sheriff of a small county in the North Carolina mountains has asked the State Bureau of Investigation to open a criminal probe into the local elections board.

Franklin County Sheriff Robert L. Holland said Tuesday that he and District Attorney Mike Bonfoey asked for the state investigation. That comes after a county official raised concerns last week about "possible questionable business practices and some possible irregularities with some records" at the board of elections. After a brief investigation, Holland said the locks on the building were changed to "deny all access to the office until further notice."

Holland would not provide further detail about what prompted the closure.

SBI spokeswoman Noelle Talley confirmed that an investigation is underway, but would not discuss the nature of the allegations.
