Ex-NC Sen. Harris Blake of Pinehurst dies at 84
A former North Carolina state senator who served briefly as the chamber's No. 2 leader has died.
Ex-Sen. Harris Blake died at his Pinehurst home Monday at age 84. Funeral home operator Jamie Boles says Blake died from natural causes after an extended illness.
Blake was a commercial real estate developer elected to the Senate in 2003. He served five two-year terms. The Republican was elected by his colleagues as deputy president pro tempore in his final term, when the GOP took over leadership for the first time in more than 100 years.
Gov. Pat McCrory called Blake a "gentleman" who worked for everyone in his district, regardless of party affiliation. McCrory was in Blake's hometown marking this week's U.S. Open golf tournament.
Blake's funeral is Thursday in Jackson Springs.
