NC DOT considers restoring railroad line
Transportation officials are considering reopening a railroad line in southeastern North Carolina.
The StarNews of Wilmington reported reported that officials are considering if it would be worth the investment to restore a 27-mile line between northern New Hanover County and southern Duplin County.
Paul Worley with the state rail division is studying the local economic impact and cost of restoring the line between Wallace and Castle Hayne.
Worley says officials also are looking at connections to military bases and industrial sites and terminals, including the Port of Wilmington.
He says state lawmakers will get a preliminary report on the idea by March 1. A final report is due in January 2015.
Officials say restoration of the line could help attract new industry to the area.
