NC Sen. Brunstetter considering US Senate bid
A Forsyth County state senator is considering whether to enter the Republican U.S. Senate primary. He says he's doing so after Senate leader Phil Berger, who is also weighing a similar bid, asked him to think about it.
Sen. Pete Brunstetter says he has no exact timetable for deciding on joining an already crowded field seeking to take on Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan in 2014.
The Senate budget co-chairman said Tuesday night he won't join the race if Berger does. He added that his candidacy isn't automatic if Berger declines.
Four people already are seeking the GOP nomination, including House Speaker Thom Tillis.
Berger didn't return a phone call seeking comment. A Berger spokesman planned to comment later Wednesday.
Berger is running a television commercial that, in part, criticizes Hagan.
