Former TV anchor running for NC congress seat
A radio host and former North Carolina television news anchor is entering the race to succeed ex-Rep. Mel Watt in Congress.
Vince Coakley worked for years at WSOC-TV in Charlotte and briefly at WBT radio. Coakley said Tuesday he would enter the 12th Congressional District race as a Republican. Coakley held a series of events in the district, which includes parts of Greensboro and Winston-Salem, then south along Interstate 85 through Salisbury into Charlotte.
He's the only announced Republican in the race. At least six Democrats are seeking their party's nomination in the heavily Democratic district. Watt resigned this month to become head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency.
Coakley says he's running on a platform of "freedom," saying it's the foundation for job creation. He also supports smaller government.
