Gryphons walk off on Senior Night

The Thomas Jefferson Gryphons showed a flair for the dramatic in their final home game of the season. Nine-hole hitter Tyler Mitchell singled home Coleman Putnam with one out in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Gryphons to the 2-1 walk-off win at McNair Field Tuesday.

“I thought about bunting him, but I realized that he is so fast that he won’t get doubled up," said head coach Chris White of Mitchell’s hit. “I decided to let him swing away and he came through.”

Putnam led off the bottom half with a walk and moved to second on an error before Mitchell chased him home.

Mitchell’s hit made a winner of Brandon Riggs, who pitched a complete game on four hits, only giving up on unearned run in the first.

“Both pitchers pitched really well tonight,” White said. “I think both teams were playing for one run and we made the plays at the end.”

Thomas Jefferson (4-8, 2-7 SPC) ran into trouble in the first inning. Riggs walked Jha’Qui Adams on four pitches. He then scored when Stephen Moss botched a tailor-made double play.

The Gryphons got that run back in the bottom half.

Mason Martin led off with a single and moved to third on a hit and run by Stephen Moss. Martin then scored on an infield single by Austin Pressley to tie the game at 1-1.

Both pitchers settled down from that point. Riggs did not allow a base runner until Austin Nixon singled with one out in the fifth. Riggs responded by picking off Nixon and getting out of the inning with no further damage.

TJCA mounted a two-out threat in the bottom half. Martin lined a single back through the box and stole second, but Austin Sellers struck out Zac Parks to leave the game tied at 1-1.

Sellers led off the top of the seventh, reaching via error, but Martin made a diving catch in center for the first out. Parks then made stop at third and flipped to second for a force out and Riggs snagged a liner to end the inning setting up Mitchell’s heroics in the final half inning.
