Junior softball All-Stars claim state title
After five days of softball, the Junior Softball All-Stars from District 1 earned the title of State Champions Wednesday with a 5-1 win over Swain County.
The girls started the week strong with a convincing 19-1 win over the King All-Stars.
Kyonne McEntyre led the charge going 3-for-4 at the plate with three doubles and five RBIs while Wmily Allred earned the win in the circle.
Game 2 was more of the same as District 1 downed Swain County 16-5
McEntyre belted two more doubles and Takirah McKinney joined the act with two hits of her own.
Biddy Sayre took the pitching win.
In the second of three match-ups with Swain County, District 1 fell in a close one, 7-6, despite three hits from Jori Whiteside.
However, they had their revenge in the championship game behind an outstanding outing from Sayre who struck out nine batters en route to the 5-1 win.
Taylor Hardin was credited with key hits in the title game for District 1.
From here the girls will leave the county Friday for Fort Myers, Fla. to compete in the regional tournament starting Saturday, July 27.
"They're all excited," head coach OJ Gary said. "We only have one girl on the team who was on the team last year that went to Florida. We're ready to go."
The excitement extends beyond the girls in uniform.
"It was always my own dream to win a state championship growing up but I never did," Gary said. "So now being a coach it's sort of like a dream come true in a way even for me."
