Friday night started the onslaught of over 60 youth basketball teams from all over North Carolina to Rutherford County for the AYBA (American Youth Basketball Association) North Carolina State Tournament.

East Rutherford High and Middle school will be hosting game throughout the weekend along with Cool Springs Gym, Callison Gym and the Spindale House.

Third through 11th grade teams will be showcased, including recent 8th-grade AAU State Champions, Forest City Heat.

“It’ll be a good time for the community to come out and support the kids,” Forest City Heat coordinator Larry Ross said. “We have some really good teams.”

Even with the amount of out-of-town teams, the main attraction will still be the Forest City Heat’s 11-grade squad currently ranked No. 6 in the nation by AAU basketball. The team features local stars Devonte Boykins, Roddric Ross and Travis Waldroup-Rodriguez. Shelby High point guard Gabe DeVoe also stars on the team.

The 11th grade team takes the court today at 2:45 p.m. against the Carolina Kings and again at 5:15 p.m. against the Carolina Flame. Both games will be at East Rutherford High School.

Championship games will conclude the tourney Sunday evening.
