The run for the 7/8 All-Stars from Rutherfordton in the state tournament came to a halt Monday night, but it wasn’t from lack of trying as they tallied 16 hits in an 8-7 loss to Coulwood-Oakdale who amassed 19 hits.

Rutherfordton shot out of the gates early and owned a 5-0 lead after just 2.5 innings.

Coulwood-Oakdale stormed back in the bottom half of the third with five runs of their own to knot the sore at 5-5.

The tie was short-lived, however, as Rutherford put two more runs on the board in the fourth inning.

Coulwood-Oakdale responded with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take an 8-7 lead.

Rutherfordton failed to regain the momentum going scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings.

Elijah Stafford led the hit parade for Rutherfordton going 4-for-4 and scoring two runs while Audrey Scruggs and Isaiah Hipp each added three hits in the losing effort.

Nate Ellenburg finished the day 2-for-4 and Trey Shearer, Gage McFadden, Ken Hines and Jermany Harris each had one hit.

Rutherfordton finished the single-elimination tournament, 3-1.
