Lady Cavs down Chase, 79-36
It was close for about five minutes Tuesday night when The East Rutherford Lady Cavs invaded Henrietta to tangle with the Lady Trojans of Chase. After 32 minutes of one-sided basketball, East walked away with a 79-36 win.
"This was a game we should win," East head coach Larry Ross said after the win. "Everybody logged some minutes tonight for this good conference win."
East jumped ahead early to a double-digit lead at 14-4 with still over two minutes left in the first quarter.
A Kendra Holcombe 3 lead cut the Chase (0-6, 3-13 SMAC) deficit to seven but East finished on a 6-3 run to end the first quarter with a 20-10 lead.
Less than halfway through the second quarter the lead for East stretched from 10 to 13 at 28-15. A 3-pointer by Shay Dewberry pushed the Cavalier lead to 15 with 4:25 left in the half.
From there East went on a 12-2 run before calling a timeout with 1:42 left and a 43-18 advantage. The run eventually at 19-2 as the Lady Cavs took a 50-18 lead into the break.
Rachel Camp opened the third quarter with a triple from the left wing to spark a 14-2 run in the first four minutes of the frame to jump ahead 62-20.
Chase matched the Cavs the rest of the way in the third but the 42-point lead still loomed heading into the final quarter with East up 67-25.
With Camp on the bench for the fourth quarter the Cavs still managed to outscore the Lady Trojans 12-11 with timely 3-point shooting en route to the 79-36 final.
Camp led all scorers with 32 points while Dewberry added 18 and Justina Greene poured in 12.
"[Dewberry] really stepped up tonight," Ross said. "If she can gives us 10-15 points every game we'll do great."
Kaitlyn Smart led Chase with 25 points.
East returns to action tomorrow night at Carolina Day while Chase travels to Patton on Friday. Tipoffs are set for 6 p.m.
