Cavalier girls top Shelby, 54-36

It was obvious, from the onset, that East Rutherford girls basketball coach Larry Ross was not pleased with his starters.

In the first 21 seconds of the Cavaliers' game with Shelby, East Rutherford had three turnover and was forced to take a timeout, prompting Ross to remove his starters and go to his bench.

However, after the 4 minute, 26 second mark of the first quarter, the Cavalier starters came back in and held Shelby to just 31 points for the rest of the game en route to a 54-36 win Friday night at East Rutherford.

"We came out really slow," Ross said. "We had those three turnovers and I took the starters out. When they went back in, they were much more aggressive."

Rachel Camp led the Cavaliers (12-3, 3-2 SMAC) with 29 points including a barrage of 14 points in the third quarter.

It was the same quarter that saw East Rutherford outscore the Lions (1-11, 1-3 SMAC) 26-8.

"We did get a few shots when we could but we just could not get past their pressure," said Shelby head coach Cal Pass.

East Rutherford used the combined pressure with an inside presence that left the Lions lacking second-effort shots. The Cavaliers outrebounded Shelby 46-38. Justina Greene had 15 of those rebounds for the game — most of which came in the third quarter where Shelby shot just 12 percent from the field and had just three field goals. Greene added 10 blocks to her overall tally.

"Justina had a great game rebounding and blocking shots," Ross said. "She's been big for us all year long."

Despite the sluggish start, the Cavaliers held Shelby to just 16 field goals, most of which came in the fourth quarter where the Lions outscored East Rutherford 16-2.

"We had four freshmen out there at one point and we're just trying to get a little better each night," Pass said.

In addition to Camp's game-high 29 points, Shay Dewberry added 11 and Cassandra Allen had nine points for the Cavaliers.
