Rain halts 423 playoff game in the fifth
It wasn't a matter of if it would rain but rather of when it would get there as the dark clouds rolled their way towards the ball field.
Unfortunately for Post 423 the rains arrived in the top of the fifth inning suspending their game against Shelby's Post 82 with them trailing 3-2 and clinging to their playoff hopes.
The stoppage means that the teams will have to wait until tomorrow to resume their elimination game with a chance to move on in the American Legion playoffs riding on the outcome.
“Winner goes on to the next round,” said Post 423 coach Curtis Snethen before the game. “Season's over for the loser. It's that simple.”
It would be that simple except for the weather that has played havoc with baseball games for weeks ranging from Little League softball to the Forest City Owls and now Post 423.
It was Post 82 that opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with aggressive base running and a few mistakes from 423.
Jordan Munn surrendered a walk to Russ Branch who then stoled second and third base in short order.
Munn, sitting on two outs, then threw a pitch into the backstop allowing Branch to score from third ducking under the tag at home plate for a 1-0 lead.
Post 423 got their offense in motion in the top of the fourth after struggling early against Post 82 starting pitcher Jacob Baker. Bryce Perez hit a solid RBI double that scored Zack Wright who had reached second base after being walked.
Post 82 then pulled Baker who had given up only two hits with two walks and five strikeouts through almost four innings of work in favor of Bradley Evans. Jordan Munn then connected with Evans first pitch scoring Perez from second base and giving Post 423 a 2-1 lead.
The lead would not last through the fourth as Post 82 errupted for four hits in the bottom of the inning including three doubles. Tyler Hendrick's second single of the game scored Colton Bowman who had reached third base on a bad pitch by Matthew Dailey giving Post 82 a 3-2 lead after four.
In the fifth, lightning flashed, forcing umpires to call the game after a brief delay. The game is scheduled to continue in Shelby and pick up in the top of the fifth.
Post 423 will have Daiquon Davenport on second after he connected on a double that rolled to the outfield fence.
