Hacksaw Reynolds Leads County Golf tourney by 3 strokes
Jimmy "Hacksaw" Reynolds shot a 8-under 64 Saturday at the rain-soaked Rutherfordton Golf Club to take a three-shot lead over former champ Kevin Roberts who carded a 67.
Reynolds is making his third attempt to win his sixth title to tie Bobby Bridges for the all-time championship lead.
After shooting a four-under par 32 on the front nine, Reynolds birdied five of the next six holes to take a commanding six-shot lead over Roberts.
Roberts gained ground on the next four holes making two birdies and two pars while Reynolds made a bogey and three pars over those holes for the final three shot spread.
Last year Reynolds lost an epic battle called "one for the ages" to Jake Watson on the eighth playoff hole.
Forty-four golfers battled the steady rain for most of the day but the course held up.
Thomas Deck led the afternoon golfers with a 4-under 68 to grab third place and Brent Lowery was in fourth place with a 69. Patrick Waters, Robert Reynolds and Freddie Jones all shot even par-72 to round out the top seven. Six other players came in at two over 74.
Play will resumes today at 9 a.m. with the tournament leaders teeing off around 1 p.m.
"I hope the rain holds off tomorrow so we can get this completed," tournament chairman Casey Hill said. "We delayed the start today for more than an hour just so we could try and complete the first round. Everybody looks forward to this event each year and other courses in the area plan their tournament schedules around this one."
The decision to play on Saturday wasn't an easy one for Hill ... until he looked at his calendar.
"We thought about calling it off and trying to reschedule it but there just wasn't another weekend available to fit it in," Hill said. "The golfers were ready to play so we just went for it and got it completed."
