Christiana Jimenez scored a game-winning goal in the 79th minute off a corner kick to lift the Chase past county rival East Rutherford 2-1 Thursday night.

Jimenez, who also took the corner kick, got the ball back on a pass from Kendra Holcombe, worked her way free of two defenders and fired a shot in the top right corner of the net  from well outside the box.

“What a beautiful goal,” said Chase coach Scott Hopper. “Christiana has come up big for us all season and she did it again.  You can’t ask for a bigger goal than the one she just made.

Not only was the goal, a game winner, but it also keeps Chase’s playoffs hopes alive. Because the Lady Trojans and Cavaliers split the season series, a coin toss will determine who earns the second playoff birth out of the 2A portion of SMAC .

Chase began the match as the more aggressive team. As a result, they earned three shots on goal in the first five minutes. The best chance came when Alyssa Watson found  Kendra Holcombe but her shot was just wide.

The action then opened up as both teams found space behind the other’s defense. The fastbreaking style favored the Lady Cavaliers. East garnered a pair of shots from Chyenne Deyton and Kendra Russell, but Chase  goalie Harley Cline was up to the challenge, coming  out of goal to clear the shots,

Chase found the back of the net in the 36th minute.

Jimenez made a strong run and was able to put a shot on frame. East keeper Justine Greene made the initial stop, but Audrey Gorman was in position to send home the rebound.

The goal was then disallowed  as one official signaled offsides, but after a lengthy discussion the call was overturned and the goal was allowed to stand. As a result, Chase took a 1-0 halftime lead.

The Lady Trojans were once again the aggressors coming out of the break as they committed all but one player forward to attack. That strategy paid off in the 43rd minute when Jimenez was fouled just outside the box and was awarded a direct  kick. Greene saved the shot, however, as the score remained .

Much of the rest of the match was played on the Lady Trojans half of the pitch, but the Lady Cavaliers did have a clear run at the goal in the 65th minute.

Anna Vazquez was tripped in the penalty area at the end of that run and earned a penalty kick. She then put a shot in the near corner past a diving Cline to tie the match at 1-1.

Chase wasted little time in responding getting two quick shots off the restart, but both attempts sailed just over the crossbar.

The Lady Trojans began the build up to  the game-winning goal began in the 76th minute. The home team used a series of throw ins to move the ball down the field. Holcombe then worked her way free for a shot that was tipped over the bar for a corner kick that was the prelude to Jimenez’s heroics.
