Lady Gryphons outrun by Polk
The Thomas Jefferson Lady Gryphons (3-7) hung with Polk for the first half, but a sluggish third quarter was too much to overcome as they fell 48-34 Friday night.
“We showed fight and fire tonight,” said coach Jim Greengrass. “That’s something I haven’t seen in a while. We were in the game with a very good Polk team and we fought to the end.”
The game was tight early as Rachel Tevis and Polk’s Kara Overholt scored on their team’s first trip down the floor.
From that point on, however, Polk went on a 9-3 run with the only TJCA field goal coming on a Gracie Hollifield rebound and putback. As a result, Polk held an 11-5 lead until Autumn Edwards beat the quarter buzzer with a putback of her own to cut the deficit to 11-7.
Anna Dedmon used her speed to go on a personal 4-0 run, hitting consecutive layups to open the second quarter and tie the game at 11-11.
The Lady Wolverines answered with a 7-0 run capped by Shalyn Brown's 3-pointer.
Dedmon broke the steak with another layup and Victoria Bennett found room in the paint to cut the deficit to three points.
Polk, however, went on another run, this time 6-0 to go up by nine points late in the quarter.
The Lady Griffs beat the horn again, this time by Bennett as TJCA trailed 24-17 at the break.
The third quarter proved to be costly for TJCA.
The home team only managed six points while Polk slowly pulled away. By the time the dust settled, the visitors grabbed a 37-23 advantage.
Tevis canned a 3 to start the final frame, but TJCA could get no closer than that 11 points the rest of the way.
The Lady Wolverines pushed their advantage to as many as 20 points before Bennett and Dedmon combined on a late 6-0 run to account for the 48-34 final.
Bennett led the Lady Griffs with 13 points while Dedmon poured in 12.
