Golden Lions tame Chase
The Shelby Golden Lions defeated the Chase Trojans 3-0 Thursday in an early conference match-up.
Shelby (2-3) controlled the game early keeping the Trojans (0-4-1) on defense for most of the first half.
Shelby’s Rebecca Burton took the first shot at goal sailing it just right of the net. A foul in the fifth minute set up Chase Thompson for a penalty kick giving Shelby a 1-0 lead.
A few minutes later Thompson gathered in the ball at midfield sidestepped a defender and fired in her second goal of the game to extend the lead to 2-0 for Shelby.
The Trojans made their deepest threat in the 34th minute but were turned away by Shelby’s Morgan Greene. Shelby took their 2-0 lead into halftime.
The second half saw little change as Shelby continued to put pressure on the Trojan goal. Fortunately for the Trojans, Haley Cline turned in a solid performance stopping numerous shots including three in a span of a minute and a half.
“We’re trying to sure (our defense) up,” Chase head coach Scott Hopper said after the game. “We’re having a hard time getting the ball on the other third of the field. Defensively though, we are improving.”
Kendra Holcombe and Christiana Jimenez also turned in strong defensive performances for the Trojans.
“Jimenez played really well,” Hopper noted. “She’s all over the field.”
Shelby’s Thompson added her third goal of the contest in the 59th off a corner kick out of bounds giving Shelby the 3-0 win.
“We’re a very young team. We lost seven starters from last year,” Hopper said, “For us it’s an improvement and I’m happy with the progress.”
The Chase Trojans will play again next Tuesday as they host Avery at 6 p.m.
