Gryphons rebound against Frankston
After losing in the opening round of the Bud Black/Dennis Tate Holiday Classic to the hosting Cherryville Ironmen, the Thomas Jefferson Gryphons came back Friday afternoon and down the Frankston Blues 58-49.
After trailing the Blues 19-8 after one quarter, the Gryphons tightened up their defense and found themselves tied with Frankston 38-38 heading into the fourth quarter.
"It started out ugly just like it did yesterday," TJCA head coach Ken Hines said after the win. "After halftime we were more patient and didn't make nearly as many turnovers. We just played hard and a lot smarter."
The Gryphons outscored the Blues 20-11 in the fourth quarter to cement to 58-49 win.
"It was just a matter of us doing what we need to do," said Hines. "We really put forth a quality effort in the second half and that was the key."
Justus Freeland led TJCA with 17 points while Efrim Borders and Nick Mintz added 13 points apiece.
Thomas Jefferson is set to face the Frankston Blues "A-team" today at 2:30 in Cherryville.
