Cavaliers outlast West Stokes, 62-57
It wasn’t pretty at first, but behind a 30-point effort from Travis Waldroup-Rodriguez, the East Rutherford Cavaliers pulled off a 62-57 win on the road over West Stokes to move into the third round of the state playoffs.
“My boys came up this mountain and played their [butts] off,” East Rutherford head coach Brad LeVine said. “I’m proud of them because they really toughed this one out.”
“It was an intense game and I thought they were really good,” Waldroup-Rodriguez said after the game. “We watched their tapes but they were a lot more physical than I expected.”
Both teams struggled in the first half with East Rutherford leading 24-20 at the break, but the teams found a rhythm in the second half.
“We missed some shots but it just took us some time to score,” LeVine said. “We didn’t get the ball inside much until later on.”
The East Rutherford win paired with a Forest Hills upset of Monroe, means the Cavaliers will be back at home for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with the Yellow Jackets.
“They kids were tickled that they won, but when they found out that Forest Hills won they just went crazy,” LeVine said. “I’m certainly glad we don’t have to travel. I’m tickled we get to come back home in front of our crowd.”
