Lady Mountaineers too much for Chase

The Chase Lady Trojans just could not find an answer for the size of Mitchell. The Lady Mountaineers dominated play in the paint and took home a 49-31 win.

“Even though the score doesn’t show it, I think we were competitive,” said coach Todd Davis. “That’s something I couldn’t say in some cases last year. We are improving and we are getting there. We just need to lean to get more players involved.”

After Kaitlyn Smart scored the game’s first basket on a putback, Mitchell exploded on a 9-0 capped on a jumper Madison Spurling.

Chase (2-2) fought back from the foul line, sinking four straight from the charity strip to cut the deficit to 9-6.

The Lady Mountaineers closed the quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 17-6 lead.

Hannah Wood broke the streak with a layup, but Spurling proved to be too much inside as she continually found the soft spot in the Trojan zone.

Cassie Burleson also proved a problem in the paint as Chase found themselves trailing 25-10 midway through the frame.

Smart tried to keep her team in the contest with a deep three point shot just before the break, but it was not enough as the Lady Trojans still trailed 29-16 at halftime.

Mitchell open the second half with a full court press that keyed an 8-0 run to push the lead 37-16.  In fact, the home team did not manage a field goal  until the 1:32 mark of the quarter on a Smart layup.

Smart scored again before the buzzer sounded to make the tally 39-20.

Chase made a slight push to open the final frame going on a 5-0 run to open the quarter But 14 points was a close as the Lady Trojans would get the rest of the way as Mitchell continued to pound the ball inside.

As a result, the Lady Mountaineers pulled away for the 49-31 win.

Smart led Chase with a game high 17 points.
