Dedmon leads Gryphons past WCAA
Before their match with the WCAA Trailblazers, Thomas Jefferson head coach Brain Espinoza said he was going to turn senior striker Anna Dedmon loose. Once he did, the visitors from Asheville could not contain her. Dedmon notched a first-half hat trick en route to a five goal night as TJCA ran past WCAA 6-1 on Friday night.
“I hate to say this but Anna is our offense right now,” said Espinoza. “She is so unselfish that she looks to get other players involved, but we need her to put the ball in the back of the net and she did that tonight.”
Thomas Jefferson (3-0) wasted little time getting on the board as Anna Dedmon took in a ball at midfield, outran three defenders and fired a shot in the bottom of the net for a 1-0 TJCA lead. That goal in the fourth minute was just the beginning of Dedmon’s big night. She also garnered long rang goals in the 9th and 20th minute. Both markers were unassisted and came from well outside the box to complete the first-half hat trick.
After WCCA’s Emily Wheeler cut the Lady Trailblazers deficit to 3-1, Dedmon answered with her fourth goal of the match. Alexis Burch made a nice run to the near corner. The goalie made the initial stop, but Dedmon was in position to send home the rebound for a 4-1 halftime lead.
The second half was field with near misses for TJCA as Dedmon had two shots hit off the post Malarie Harris was denied in the same manner as the score remained 4-1.
The Lady Gryphons added a fifth goal in the 61st minute that once again came off the left foot of Dedmon. Burch delivered a pass that Dedmon caught up to just outside the box. She then cut to her left and beat the keeper to the far post. Moments later, Dedmon returned the favor as she connected with Burch on a similar play except Burch nestled the ball in the near corner of the net for a score.
