Gryphons shine at conference meet
Thomas Jefferson compete in the Southern Piedmont Conference Track Championships on Wednesday and finished in fourth place on the girls’ side and second on the boys’.
Alethia Griffin led the Lady Gryphons with a first-place finish in the Triple Jump (27-09) and second-place finish in the High Jump (4-00). Aman Briggs won the 200-meter race (28.6) and placed second in the 400-meter (1:04). Briggs and Griffin were both named All-Conference.
Savannah Pye added a third-place finish in the Long Jump (11-06).
Hayden Alexander led the boys’ team with first-place finished in the 1600 and 3200-meter races to earn All-Conference honors.
The 4x800 relay team of Alexander, Ryuki Deaton, Stephen Snyder and Keaton Poole won top honors with a time of 9:13.7 while the 4x400 relay team of Tyler Mitchell, Efrim Borders, Poole and Mason Fenner finished second with a time of 3:46.8.
Fenner had a solid individual day with a second-place finish in the high jump (5-08) and a third-place finish in the 400-meter (55.6).
Thomas Jefferson got second-place performances by Chris Brassel in the 110-meter hurdles (20.00) and Poole in the 800-meter (2:17). Snyder placed third in both the 1600-meter (5:04) and 300-meter hurdles (48.1) while Mitchell placed third in the 200-meter (24.4).
The Gryphons will compete next at A.C. Reynolds High School April 23 before heading into the 1A Western Regionals May 3.
