The Lady Gryphons made quick work of the Lady Patriots from Piedmont Charter Friday night at Cool Springs Gymnasium claiming a 70-12 blowout victory.

Assistant coach brian Espinoza stands by his team’s scoring output.

“It may seem like bad sportsmanship but it’s bout developing a style of play,” Espinoza said following the game. “It’s early in the season and in a non-conference game it’s important to develop the team.”

Thomas Jefferson opened a quick 6-0 lead on three fast break layups, two of which came from Rachel Tevis.

Piedmont’s Brittany Armstrong broke the shutout with a jumper with just two minutes left in the opening quarter.

Autumn Ruppe took over for TJCA with four quick points to restore the Gryphons’ lead.

A Victoria Bennett layup ended the scoring in the first to end it with TJCA leading 13-2.

The Lady Gryphons continued to pour it on in the second quarter.

Bennett opened up with six quick points before Anna Dedmon tacked on six of her own.

When the half finally came to a close, TJCA owned a commanding 34-4 lead.

TJCA kept running on the Patriots after the break and opened with 16 points in the first three minutes of the third quarter and stretched their lead to 50-4.

Dedmon continued to feed Bennett under the basket and the entire team locked down on defense as the quarter ended with the Lady Gryphons leading 55-11.

“Anna and Victoria have a great chemistry,” Espinoza said. “The whole coaching staff is looking forward to working with them all season.”

In the fourth quarter the lady Gryphons continued to shut down the Patriots while still lighting up the scoreboard.

Dedmon continued to have fast break layups whenever she touched the ball and the patriots couldn’t find the bottom of the net.

At the final horn the Gryphons led the Patriots 70-12 for the victory.

Dedmon led all scorers with 23 points while Bennett dropped in 17 points of her own.

“This win means a lot to these girls,” Espinoza said. “If you look back at our program you’ll see that we don’t win a lot so this is fun.”

TJCA returns the action Friday, Dec. 7 when they travel to Piedmont Charter. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
