Hilltoppers, Gryphons compete in local tourneys
Hilltoppers sweep Mitchell
BAKERSVILLE — The R-S Central boys finished their weekend in Bakersville undefeated with a 84-42 over the host, Mitchell High, on Saturday night.
Central set the tone in the first quarter by outscoring Mitchell 26-8 and went into halftime with a 48-19 lead.
The Hilltoppers shot 52 percent on the night and all team members scored. The team finished the night with 21 assists and 18 steals.
Desmond Whitesides led the way with 15 points and six steals.
Jaylen Hollis added 14, Rashaun Whitesides poured in 11 and Jay Blanton contributed nine points, five assists and four steals.
In girls action, the Lady Hilltoppers rode a strong first half into an even stronger second half to down the Mitchell girls 63-41.
Central outscored Mitchell 30-20 in the first half and 36-21 in the second on their way to the victory.
Tia Bristol led the charge for head coach Darius Fuller and the Hilltoppers with 22 points.
Te’ja Twitty had another outstanding night with 15 points of her own.
Gryphons compete in Davidson
DAVIDSON — Thomas Jefferson traveled to Davidson this weekend to compete against Community School of Davidson and Gray Stone Day School.
The Gryphons’ boys team laid a mythical egg against Community School of Davidson Friday night and lost 50-31.
The Gryphons shot a dismal 8-47 from the field that included a 2-18 performance from behind the arc and 9-18 shooting from the charity stripe.
Not to mention the 20 turnovers commited by TJCA throughout the contest.
Junior guard Efrim Borders missed the contest.
“I think a lot of our probnlems were because of jitters, and it showed,” said head coach Ken Hines.
However, the Gryphons rebounded on Saturday with a 66-44 win over Gray Stone.
TJCA shot a much-improved 21-46 from the floor, 6-13 from long range and 7-12 from the free throw line.
Truth Freeland led the way for the Gryphons with 18 points while Efrim Borders added 14, Chris Mintz pitched in 13 and Nick Mintz contributed 11.
The Lady Gryphons swept the weekend with wins over both Davidson and Gray Stone.
Anna Dedmon’s 20 points led the Lady Gryphons past Davidson 47-37 while Victoria Bennett poured in 12 points to lead the Gryphons’ charge past Gray Stone.
