TJCA tops Eagles, remains unbeaten
Mathias Talbert scored a pair of first-half goals as Thomas Jefferson overcame a slow start to run past Lincoln Charter 4-0 Thursday night. The win keeps the Gryphons (8-0-1,2-0 SPC) undefeated on the season and helps them remain atop the Eurosport coaches poll.
“We gave away some balls early, but that’s going to happen sometimes when you play out of the back,” said TJCA head coach Brian Espinoza. “We settled down and played much better after that. Mathias really came up big tonight. He really benefited from all the attention they were paying to Alain (Colnot).”
TJCA looked sluggish in the early stages of the match, giving away two balls in their own third. Stephen Maimone stopped both of the resulting shots.
That seemed to wake up the Gryphons as they began to control possession. After keeping the ball for several minutes with a series of precision passes, Mathias Talbert worked his way free for a shot. He put it in the near bottom corner of the net for a 1-0 TJCA lead
The rest of the half played out in a similar manner as TJCA used patient possession to keep the ball on the Eagles side of the pitch. Talbert made an overlapping run with Alain Colnot and received a pass in the box. Talbert initial attempt was blocked, but he was in position to send home the rebound for a 2-0 Gryphon lead TJCA earned numerous corner kicks the rest of the half, but the score remained 2-0.
The barrage of corner kicks continued in the second half and one found the mark in the 50thminute. Joseph Thelen earned a corner from a deflected shot and also took the ensuing kick. The ball found its way to the head of Joseph Pate who flicked it on frame for a 3-0 lead.
Lincoln Charter’s only real threat in the second half came in the 65th minute, but Maimone made a diving save to his left to preserve the shutout
TJCA’s Hayden Alexander capped the scoring in the 70th minute, when his shot ricocheted of a defender and rolled in the back of the net.
TJCA returns to the pitch Monday as they host Highland Tech.
