The Thomas Jefferson Gryphons just couldn’t stop Cedric Mackey. The junior fullback rushed for 308 yards on 43 carries and three touchdowns as TJCA fell 40-21 Friday night at Bessemer City.

With the win, the Yellow Jackets are in the driver’s in the Southern Piedmont Conference at 5-4, 3-0 SPC.

“We had very poor tackling tonight,” said TJCA head coach Jerry Cash. “He was a lot stronger then we thought. .”

Bessemer City’s workhorse Cedric Mackey carried the load on the opening drive. He ran for  three  first downs and capped the drive on a six yards out to give the Yellow Jackets an early 7-0 lead.

After a Gryphon punt, the home team converted a pair of third downs. Quarterback Tyler Bess then ran for a long first

down. Mackey did the same and Bess then  finished the drive with an athletic 11-yard touchdown run to make the score 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Gryphon defense finally forced a  punt early in the second, but Efrim fumbled the punt and Bessemer City recovered. The Yellow Jackets  converted that miscue into points as Mackey scored from 7 yards out to make the tally 20-0.

Mason Martin looked to find Borders to start the next drive  but threw an interception. Jha’Qui Adams  picked off the pass and eventually scored on a 39-yard sweep . The conversion was no good to leave the score at 26-0.

TJCA got some rhythm on their final drive of the half. Seth McCraw ripped up a pair of long runs but the drive  looked as if it would stall. Borders then made a big play as he burst through the line on a fourth-and-3 for a 15-yard score.

Bessemer City responded behind Mackey who ripped off a 43-yard run and scored on an 9-yard scamper to make the halftime score 32-7

Borders took the second half kickoff to the Bessemer City 38. A first down run by Borders put the Gryphons in the  in  the redzone. A holding penalty  did not matter as Borders reeled in a 32-yard touchdown catch. Mason Fenner booted the extra point to cut the deficit to 32-14.

TJCA then forced a turnover on downs and moved across midfield on a run by Coty Flynn but the drive stalled as the quarter  ended with the score at 32-14. Martin broke a tackle and scored on a 14 yard run to cut the deficit to 32-21. Coty Flynn the pounced on a fumble, but Martin returned the favor with an interception on the next play. Mackey then melted the clock until Bess hit Josh Davis on a 14 yard slant for a touchdown to put the game out of reach 40-21.

The Gryphons (6-3,1-2 SPC) look to snap their current two game skid as they host Pine Lake Prep next week.
