Caldwell taking over as TJCA AD
After 10 years as a physical education instructor and coach for multiple sports, Mike Caldwell is getting the chance to run the show as the new athletic director at Thomas Jefferson.
Caldwell's predecessor, Chris White, was named the new athletic director at Burns High School on Monday.
"I'm real excited about the opportunity," Caldwell said. "I'm just looking forward to the challenges it brings and I hope to be successful."
Caldwell has spent a decade in the Thomas Jefferson system as a teacher and coach for football, baseball and basketball.
"This chance means the world to me," Caldwell said. "I'm going from cutting the grass, starting the football program and other smaller programs to being able to run the programs and budget the money."
"I am fully confident that he will keep Gryphon athletics moving in a positive direction," TJCA Headmaster Joe Maimone said. "He has the full support of our staff and families."
According to Caldwell, serving under White for five years has helped prepare him for his new gig.
"I don't know if [White] was trying to prepare me for an athletic director job before he left, but he let me in on a lot of the aspects of the job," Caldwell said. I hate he's leaving and I hate I'm getting this job because he's leaving because he was a mentor to me."
Now with the full responsibility of the athletic program at TJCA, the challenges start for Caldwell.
"I'm just a rookie so my head is spinning a little right now with all kinds of people coming at me," he said.
Luckily, after 10 years in the program Caldwell has developed a solid foundation of support.
"All the reaction has been positive, the phone has been ringing off the hook with people congratulating me," Caldwell said. "I couldn't ask for anything better."
