TJCA falls to Owen
The Owen Warhorses scored single runs in the second, third, sixth and seventh innings and rode a complete-game effort from their pitcher Sam Drummond to shut out Thomas Jefferson 4-0 Tuesday at McNair Field.
“We got some got good pitching all night but you aren’t going to win if you can’t score,” said TJCA head coach Chris White. “We are battling some injuries right now but we still have to score runs.”
After both teams went quietly in the first inning, TJCA’s (8-6, 3-4 WHC) sidearmer Brandon Riggs got two quick outs but an error by Tyler Mitchell in left field allowed an unearned run to come home. The visitors added another run when Dakota Ray lifted a shallow fly ball to right center field.
Mason Martin and Cole Bennett collided in center field allowing Ray to circle the bases for an inside the park home run. Martin and Bennett remained in the game while Riggs settled down and retired the side.
Cody Carter reached on an infield single in the bottom half and promptly stole second. One out later, Martin was hit by pitch, but Caleb Bishop and David Mendez grounded out to end the threat.
Owen pitcher Sam Drummond and Riggs dominated the next two innings only allowing one base runner between them to leave the tally at 2-0.
Dallas Henderson finally got to Riggs in the top of the sixth with a RBI single in the top of the sixth to put Owen up 3-0. The damage could have been worse had TJCA not turned a 5-3-2 double play
TJCA mounted a major threat in the bottom half, loading the bases with two outs. Drummond was wild and walked two in the frame but e struck out pinch hitter Mac Martin to escape the jam.
Owen added a run in the seventh off reliever Nathaniel Devon on a RBI double, but settled down to strike out Jake Buske
