After starting the season 7-0 the Thomas Jefferson Lady Gryphon soccer team finds themselves in the midst of a three-game losing streak with the latest setback coming at the hands of Owen 3-0 Monday night.
The streak has coincided with an injury suffered by star striker Anna Dedmon.
“Anna is our offense and when she is not at full strength, we struggle,” said TJCA head coach Brian Espinoza. “I am very proud of the way we played against a very good side though. Take away the first few minutes of each half and we are right in the game.”
Owen jumped on TJCA (7-3, 4-3 WHC) early as Sarah Gilmore beat Caroline Longerbeam in the third minute.
Dedmon nearly netted the equalizer moments later as she sped past her defender but the shot was just wide. From that point the Gryphons had numerous other chances early off corner kicks but headers by Victoria Bennett and Alyssa Edwards sailed over the crossbar.
The matched then turned physical as fouls were whistled on both sides.
As a result, TJCA and the visitors scoring chances came off set pieces.
Longerbeam was up to the challenge making a pair of diving stops to her right to keep the deficit at 1-0 at the half.
The start of the second half mirrored that of the first as Owen once again scored early in the period. This time it was Morgan Dale that sent home a rebound to make the tally 2-0 in the 41st minute.
With Demon slowed due to injury, TJCA rarely mounted an attack in the second half.
The home team continued to hustle, however getting to several loose balls and connecting on a series of passes midway through the half.
Even so, the Warlasses’ Nessi Pommeranz scored a late goal to account for the 3-0 final.
TJCA looks to snap their skid when they host Mitchell. Match time is set for 6 p.m.
