Gryphons bond at Disney
Thomas Jefferson baseball made the most of their Spring Break but loading a bus and making the 10-hour trek to Disney World.
While in the sunshine state, the Gryphons were slated to play two games in the ESPN Wide World of Sports Spring Training Classic held at the Atlanta Braves Spring Training facility.
In their first game against New York's Oxford Academy, the Gryphons rewarded a complete-game effort by Nathaniel Devon with a 9-5 win.
Devon walked only two batters while striking out eight.
Offensively the Gryphons were paced by Anthony Helton's two RBIs and base hits from Caleb Bishop, Mason Martin, Tyler Mitchell, Coleman Putnam, David Mendez and Mac Martin.
"We played well. We made only one error and put the ball in play really well," TJCA head coach Chris White said. "Nathaniel did a good job and let us rest some of our other arms. When we get back we should be well-rested."
Unfortunately, TJCA's second game of the day was cancelled due to weather.
The Gryphons celebrated the win by spending Friday at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure.
"Our game getting rained out wasn't really a big deal," White said. "It just gave us more time to out and have a good time."
In the end, the baseball took a backseat to team comradery.
"We're on a bus for 10 hours so they have to get along pretty good. At a resort like this were always together. You're really never on your own," said White. "Being able to go out and do things together other than play baseball is good bonding time."
The Gryphons return to regular-season action Tuesday when they host Owen at McNair Field at 7 p.m.
"Hopefully we'll be a little more rejuvenated when we get back into the season. Sometimes I feel kids get burnt out doing the same day-to-grind of playing baseball," White said. "A trip like this allowed us to relax a little bit. We're ready to get back and we're ready to go."
