Thomas Jefferson (2-0) bolted to a 21-0 lead and held on in the final minute at the goal line to secure a 21-13 win over the Rosman Tigers Friday night on the road.

“It was a great game by both teams,” said TJCA head coach Jerry Cash. “Our defense won us the game by forcing five turnovers. Our kids played great and showed good toughness to get a win over a good team.”

After a 35-yard return to start the game by Tyler Mitchell, a first down run by Efrim Borders pushed the ball across midfield. Borders then reeled in a 15-yard pass Mason Martin to set TJCA up at the Tiger 4 yard line. B

orders then found the endzone on a sweep to the left. A fake extra point resulted in a two-point conversion and an 8-0 Gryphon lead.

The two squads then traded turnovers, Joseph Bradshaw pounced on a Landon Shipman fumble to set the Gryphons up at midfield but they went three and out to end the first quarter with an 8-0 lead.

The TJCA defense held and a bobbled snap on fourth down gave the Gryphons the ball at the Rosman 20. However, Mason Fenner missed a 37-yard field goal to leave the tally at 8-0.

The Tigers continued to have to have trouble holding on to the ball as Mitchell caused and recovered his second fumble of the game at the Rosman 16.

Martin then hit Mitchell on a quick slant and he quickly crossed the goal line. The two-point conversion failed as TJCA led 14-0 with 5:11 left in the half.

After another three and out, TJ began marching down the field again. A pair of big runs by Trey McGhee set the Gryphons up in the redzone. Four straight stops turned the ball over on downs but Borders jumped a rout to garner an interception that ended the half at 14-0.

Rosman looked to have something going coming out of the locker room as Gage Ore returned the ball out across midfield. The defense stiffened as Borders recorded a tackle for loss on third down.

After the punt, TJCA kept the ball on the ground with McGhee and Martin. Facing fourth down, Borders took the direct snap and outran the defense to the corner of the endzone. Fenner booted the extra point as the visitors led 21-0.

Rosman finally dented the scoreboard late in the third as Tanner Green rumbled in from four yards. The score was set up on a long pass from Josh Rice to tight end Tyler Petit. The extra point was good to make the tally 21-7.

Rosman then recovered the onside kick at the Gryphon 32 yard line and Rice plunged in on a quarterback sneak early in the fourth quarter. The PAT was missed leaving the score at 21-13.

The teams traded possessions until the final minute of the game.

Rosman drove to the Gryphon 15, but on fourth down, Borders intercepted Rice at the goal line to end the game.

Thomas Jefferson gets to play on their home field next week as they host Avery.
