TJCA volleyball drops match to Lincoln Charter
The Thomas Jefferson volleyball team tried to stay close to Lincoln Charter, but fell victim to late runs in each set in a 3-0 loss to open conference play Thursday, 25-17, 25-17, 25-19.
“We are a much better team than what we showed tonight,” said head coach Jamie Carver. “We have been playing so much better than last year but we did not show it tonight. I don’t know what happened.”
Game one started out as a back and forth affair as the sides split the first 10 points.
The Gryphons (1-3, 0-1 SPC) Meredith Dinga had a pair of aces in that stretch. Lincoln Charter responded with a 9-2 run that gave the visitors a 14-7 lead.
TJCA tried to come back behind Lauren Wiltsek who slammed down numerous kills after long vollies As a result, TJCA pulled to 23-17, but they could not scratch again, falling 25-17.
The Lady Gryphons fell in an early 5-2 hole to begin the second set thanks to three straight service errors.
A big block on a kill attempt by Wiltsek stopped the bleeding, but TJCA could not cut into that lead, and still trailed 12-9 midway through the set. The Lady Eagles then went on a 5-0 run to take command of the set.
The home team did pull within 22-17 on an ace by Brianna Kale, but the deficit was too great as they fell once again fell 25-17
The Lady Gryphon came out flat in the final frame trailing 4-0 early.
They roared back behind the strong play of Wiltsek and Allie Bishop. By the time the duo had combined to score four of the next five points on aces. TJCA grabbed a 14-13 lead.
The Lady Eagles then used their speed and good court coverage and speed to dig out several potential TJCA kills and took a slim 20-18 lead. They then finished off the match with a 5-1 run to take the 3-0 win.
TJCA returns to the court as they travel to face Bessemer City Tuesday.
