TJCA’s McCraw picks up win No. 98
Thomas Jefferson’s Will McCraw picked up a win at 182 pounds, but that was the only decision the Gryphon wrestlers would garner on the night as they fell to Mitchell 74-3 Tuesday night.
McCraw’s individual victory was the 98th of his career and the senior could reach the 100-win plateau as the Gryphons host Avery Jan. 29.
Aside from McCraw though, only two other TJCA competitors, Emmanuel Wallace and Michael Minder avoided being pinned.
“We had a tough night,” said coach Jamie Hicks. “Mitchell is a very good team and we had three kids out with the flu, so we gave up 18 points right off the bat. It’s hard to recover from that.”
In the Gryphons lone victory, McCraw faced the fourth ranked wrestler in the state, Tanner Buchanan.
After both wrestlers started the match in the natural position, Buchanan quickly gained control of McCraw’s outside leg for a two-point takedown.
McCraw evened the score moments later as he dropped his hips and used that leverage to score a two-point reversal. Just before the first period ended, Buchanan managed to wriggle out of a McCraw hold for a one point escape and a 3-2 lead going into the second frame.
After McCraw scored another takedown in the second, he put the match away in the final period. Beginning in the down position, McCraw quickly reversed Buchanan’s hold and followed that with a two-point takedown to garner a quick four points and take an 8-4 lead.
Buchanan did manage to record another escape but it was not enough as McCraw held on for the 8-5 win.
