Lady Gryphons lose big to Bessemer City
CHERRYVILLE — Without three key pieces to their team the Thomas Jefferson Lady Gryphons lost handily to Bessemer City, 64-19, in the opening round of he Bud Black/Dennis Tate Holiday Classic at Cherryville High School.
"We just did not show up," head coach James Greengrass said after the loss. "I don't know what happened. Every facet of the game we didn't play well."
The Yellow Jackets opened on a 7-0 run in the first three minutes and never looked back.
The only point of the first quarter for Thomas Jefferson came on an Alyssa Edwards free throw with 1:50 left in the quarter.
The Gryphons were plagued by turnover, many of which came on attempted inbounds passes after Bessemer City scores.
The second quarter didn't involve much more scoring for TJCA.
Their first points came on a Gracie Hollifield free throw with 3:15 left in the half.
Edwards connected on two more shots from the line to conclude the TJCA scoring in the first half as they went into the break trailing 30-5.
TJCA finally nailed some shots from the field in a nine-point third quarter which was highlighted by a deep 3-pointer from Hollifield with 1:40 left in the quarter.
However, the Yellow Jackets continued to run away with a 46-14 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Autumn Ruppe scored four points in the final quarter but it wasn't nearly enough to avoid the 64-19 final.
Megan McDaniel led the Gryphons with seven points while Hollifield added six.
Bessemer City's Madison Carter led all scorers with 28.
"We 're better than this and we practice better than this, but that's no excuse for not putting the basketball in the hoop," Greengrass said.
