TJCA girls top Cherryville, 56-36
Rachael Tevis made her final regular season game in a Thomas Jefferson uniform a memorable one. The senior guard scored 25 points to lead the Lady Gryphons past Cherryville 56-36 at Cool Springs gymnasium Monday night.
The win allows TJCA to host Highland Tech in conference tournament play Wednesday.
TJCA started out hot from beyond the arc, knocking down three of their first four attempts from long range. Cherryville answered with a three to tie the game at 9 before Tevis hit a 3 and Gracie Hollifield converted a pair of foul shots to give TJCA a 14-9 at the end of the first quarter.
Tevis hit another 3 to open the second quarter and, by the time Alethia Griffin sank a reverse layup, TJCA led 23-14. Both teams then went cold from the field for the next four minutes of game action. But Tevis caught fire once again just before the half. The senior guard hit a 3 and four foul shots. As a result, the home team led 31-17 at the break.
"The other two games with Cherryville were close," said TJCA coach Roy Parton. "Rachael and Alyssa (Edwards) played great and we kept them at arm's length in the first half."
After Malarie Harris converted a layup early in the third, both squads started to get sloppy. Both sides turned the ball over with traveling violations on numerous trips up the floor. As a result, only 14 combined points were scored, with the Lady Gryphons winning the battle 9-5.
TJCA opened the final frame on a 7-0 run. Hollifield had five points, including a three-point play, while Tevis scored on a layup. Edwards then sealed the game with deep three. The final minutes belonged to the Lady Gryphons role players as Ali Parton and Emela Oyugi scratched the scorebook in the 56-36 win.
